Accelerate Durham was more than just an event—it was a powerful testament to the innovation, resilience, and excellence thriving in the Black entrepreneurial community of Durham. Despite the snowstorm, the Durham community showed up in full force, proving that when we come together, we create something truly special.

The event was packed with excitement, featuring a tradeshow hosted by All BLK Market, an inspiring pitch competition that showcased five incredible innovators, dynamic performances by special guests, and endless networking opportunities.

The event kicked off with an electrifying tradeshow hosted by All BLK Market, spotlighting Black-owned businesses in the Durham region. This vibrant showcase was a testament to the fact that Durham is home to a growing and thriving Black business community. From innovative products to essential services, attendees had the opportunity to engage with local entrepreneurs and experience firsthand the wealth of talent right here in our region. This was a crucial moment to emphasize that Black businesses are making their mark in Durham, and there is no need to look beyond our community for excellence and innovation.

The heart of the event was the pitch competition, where five idea-stage innovators took the stage to showcase their groundbreaking ventures. Each founder proved that innovation is alive and thriving in Durham, demonstrating creativity, problem-solving, and resilience.

More Than an Event: A Milestone for Black Innovation in the Durham Region

Accelerate Durham was more than just an event—it was a movement. Deputy Mayor Sterling Lee captured the essence of this when he stated in his opening remarks that “You don’t need to drive to Toronto to see innovation.” Durham is home to a thriving Black business ecosystem, and it’s time we recognize and celebrate that.

This event emphasized the importance of:

  • Keeping businesses in Durham and strengthening the local economy.

  • Attracting investors and outside interest to the innovation happening right here.

  • Showcasing Black entrepreneurs and innovation within our community.

  • Ensuring accessibility for Black entrepreneurs to organizations like Nobellum, which provide crucial support, resources, and opportunities.

By highlighting Durham’s dynamic Black business landscape, we are paving the way for sustainable growth, investment, and recognition of the incredible talent within our region.
